TOWER HILL MEMORIAL,
Panel 11. |
From Mr Billy McGee.....
Cargo ship Ashcrest,
5,652grt, (Crest Shipping Co. Ltd) had loaded a cargo of steel at
Philadelphia for Middlesbrough and joined up with the 43 ship Convoy
SC-13, which left Sydney, Cape Breton on the 22nd November 1940. During
the crossing the ships encountered a severe North Atlantic storm and five
ships were forced to return to Cape Breton while a further three foundered
and one other was wrecked off the Irish Coast. On the 8th December at
10.19 hours (GMT) West of Donegal in position 55’ 12N 10’ 02W the Ashcrest
sent a distress signal stating her rudder was broken and then nothing more
was heard from the ship and her thirty-seven crew. A Joint Arbitration
Committee considered the ship lost by “Marine Causes” on the same day,
while a Missing Ship Committee considered her lost on the 9th. In fact the
Ashcrest had been drifting helplessly towards the coast of Donegal when
she was sighted by U-140 some ten hours after her distress signal had been
sent and subsequently torpedoed and sunk in position 54’ 35N 09’ 20W.
(My own cousin Thomas McGuire from
Waterford City, Ireland also died on this ship - Shaun)
